 Jim Mattern~Artist & Craftsman

Jim Mattern

The word *Artist* connotes a  driving creativity, and often, a person  who is outside the mainstream in terms  of outlook and goals.

The word *Craftsman* (or woman)  communicates the idea of one who  works in established forms, with  precision and an attention to detail.

Sometimes an individual has both these streams of talent and then a life path can be challenging, because a way must be found to work creatively and precisely at the same time, in a medium which allows both freedom and precision.

Jim Mattern is such a person, and his life journey has been dedicated to mastery in both Art and Craft.

"I began sculpting in metal in the late 1960's after returning from Vietnam. I have spent the last 30 years perfecting my art and the critical technical processes required to bring one of my sculptures into being. I work in mild and stainless steel. A sheet of metal is not a friendly medium. A work is created by a hooded and gloved being, with blinding light from torches, ear-piercing clamor from grinders and compressors and acrid smoke from burning metal."
The light-refracting quality of my sculpture creates a pleasing kaleidoscopic effect of constantly changing colors and textures. The colors used in the sculptures are a process I have developed. To my knowledge I am the only metal artist using this method.
It is my joy and my passion to create the elemental and harmonious shape and forms of nature from this chaos of creation."
